BOUND WITH THE ARMS OF THE PRINCE OF CONDÉ. - GOUGES (Olympe de). Works. In Paris, with the author, Cailleau, 1788. In-8, (8)-23-(1)-92-(4 of which the last 2 are blank)-7 [miscoded without missing 92, 93, 95 to 99]-(1 blank)-15-(1)-211-(1 blank)-58-(2 blank) pp, brown veined calf, smooth spine cloisonné and fleuronné with green title-piece, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with gilt fleurons in spandrels and gilt coat of arms in the center, gilt edges; binding a little rubbed with worn upper cover and corners (period binding).
Third and last volume only of this edition, it includes 4 texts (2 with particular title pages): ZAMORE ET MIRZA, ou l'Heureux naufrage. A play calling the attention of the audience to the condition of the blacks and the cruelty of slavery. - REFLECTIONS ON THE NEGRO MEN. - MOLIERE CHEZ NINON. Play which, even more than the merits of Molière, praises those of Ninon de Lenclos and approaches the question of the equality of the sexes. - BIENFAISANCE, or the Good Mother. Tale with drawers including a play in which the female heroism is celebrated among other things.
BINDING WITH THE ARMS OF THE PRINCE OF CONDE, dedicatee of the present volume (OHR, plate n° 2635, iron n° 11). This is probably a present copy, as there is another copy, bound in morocco and bearing the same arms, cited by OHR and preserved in the BnF reserve.
