While Mai Trung Thứ’s work illustrates the vision of an enchanting Vietnam where the grace and elegance of young women invite reverie, the artist has also sought to bear witness to the turmoil shaking his country. Jeune femme et enfant au balluchon thus offers a less idyllic depiction. If the young woman is represented according to the usual aesthetic canons, she wears a simple and stripped dress, with bare feet. The child she is carrying in her arms is similarly dressed. The bag is a reminder of the probable exile that was imposed on them. In the background, the jungle is pierced by a cloud of fire. Eternal painter of maternities, Mai Trung Thứ represents here the strength of their bond thanks to the tenderness of their gestures amidst the horrors of war.
