A student of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), Jacques Barraband studied at the Manufacture des Gobelins and provided designs for the Manufacture de Sèvres, before exhibiting his paintings on porcelain at the Salon from 1798 to 1806. He won a gold medal in 1804 and then taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon. Barraband was renowned for the quality of his ornithological illustrations. His work for François Levaillant (1753-1824) was undoubtedly the crowning achievement of his career. He provided preparatory drawings for almost all the plates of L'Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets (1801-1805) and L'Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers... (1801-1806) and for most of those of L'Histoire Naturelle des Guêpiers et des Promérops (1807). Appreciated by Napoleon, Barraband decorated the dining room of the castle of Saint-Cloud. Barraband was also the author of the natural history sections of La description de l'Égypte. He published his observations and research in Egypt during Bonaparte's expedition. He represents here an Ibis in the edge of the banks of the Nile.
