Painter, draughtsman, poster artist and lithographer, Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec came from an aristocratic background and set up his studio in Montmartre, much to the displeasure of his parents, where he rubbed shoulders with modest people, sketching them and representing them with happiness throughout his career.
This merchant is moving forward with a determined step carrying a large box to deliver her flowers. She is represented by a few light pencil strokes, the black dress and the blue cap watercolored and the white apron treated in reserve. Behind the features of a simple woman, a woman of the people, it is dignity that prevails.
The pencils, it is not wood and lead, it is thought by the phalanges.

Always and everywhere the ugliness has its accents of beauty. It is exciting to discover them where nobody sees them .
