Probably commissioned from the artist by André Antoine (1858-1943), owner of the Antoine Theater in Paris, for his secondary residence in Camaret-sur-Mer
.
We thank Mr. Antoine Laurentin who confirmed the authenticity of this work, and who will include it in his catalog raisonné currently in preparation.
Henri-Gabriel Ibels usually stayed with his friend Aristide Briand at the home of his other friend Jean Ajalbert who rented a manor house in Trédrez-Locquémeau. Our painting represents the nearby site of Saint-Michel-en-Grèves with the women in Trégor costumes.
This work with its black rings, in the manner of a stained glass window, is close in treatment to a drawing reproduced in the Assiette au beurre of September 1, 1906, n°283.
