Claude-Émile SCHUFFENECKER (1851-1934 )View of the Normandy coast, 1890Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Old label on the back with a number: "3.597". (Small cracks). 58 x 69 cmRelated work : - La Côte Normande, Collection Arthur Altschul (1920-2002). - Study for La Côte Normande, Christie's sale, Paris, March 7, 2017, n°238. A certificate from Mrs Jill Elyse Grossvogel, dated November 2, 2022, will be given to the buyer . A regular visitor to the area around Étretat like Monet, Émile Schuffenecker's vision here is of a cliff drowned in the open expanse of the English Channel. Suggested in the distance on the right, this gives way to the springtime renewal concretized by apple and cherry trees in bloom, whose palette of pink and violet tones suggests a dating around April or May 1890. In the midst of the impressionistic treatment of this bloom, the radiating roof of the villa structures our work. It draws the eye and imposes the building as a real center of interest. In contrast to The Normandy Coast, a similar work by Schuffenecker from the same period and preserved in the Arthur Altschul Collection, our composition does not feature any sailing ships in the open sea: the flowing horizontality of the water and the harmony that emanates from it creates a modern contrast with the dynamic and striking verticality of the foreground.
