TRANSYLVANIA, HUNGARY, circa 1650-1680. Owl forming a silver and silver vermeil container resting on a base with floral decoration and a string of pearls. The eyes set in jade. Stamped between the pastes and on the base " BAUMAN ", silversmith listed by Marc Rosenberg as working in Urach-Wurttemberg, circa 1780. Bauman has been identified as having restored pieces of silverware including a 17th century bear-shaped drinking vessel, illustrated in the inventory of the Oetker collection of the Bemberg Foundation and also bearing the BAUMAN hallmark. H. 23,5 cm. Weight 504 g. A scientific analysis by Waarborg Holland attests that the three elements composing our piece have the same chemical composition. A similar example of an owl in vermeil can be found in the book: Vincent Laloux, Philippe Cruysmans. L'œil du hibou, le bestiaire des orfèvres, pp.122 and 123 and coming from the former S.J. Phillips collection in London.
