Alix AYME (1894-1989)
Maternity, circa 1960
Polychrome lacquer and gold leaves, on wood panel, signed lower right.
On the reverse side study of a couple in a landscape in lacquer, eggshells and silver leaves.
78 x 42 cm
(Small missing and bears a label 23 on the reverse).
This work represents a Vietnamese woman caring for a newborn child. It is a model who was also the nanny of Alix Aymé's son in Hanoi in the 1930s. Back in France after the war, Alix Aymé frequently took back old sketches to readapt them and realize them in lacquer. Thus this lacquer is certainly directly inspired by a sketch (not preserved) dating from his Vietnamese period. The portrait of this young Vietnamese woman can be found on many works.
We thank the Association des Amis d'Alix Aymé and Mr. Pascal Lacombe who confirmed the authenticity of this work and registered it in the online Catalogue Raisonné of the artist, under the heading "Lacquer" under number 2022/32.
A certificate of authenticity, dated October 3, 2022, will be given to the buyer.
