Statuette depicting Xianglong Luohan (降龍羅漢) made of Chinese white porcelain, China, Dehua, 20th centurySitting
on a rock from which a dragon emerges holding a pearl in its claws, the luohan holds a coiled whip-镇龙鞭-zhen long bian (whip for defeating the dragon) in his upraised left hand and a pearl in his right. He is mastering the dragon's strength, luring and taming the beast, the dragon's act of submission to the Lohan glorifying the supernatural power of the Buddhist saint. On the back the stamp of 徳化 - Dehua and the apocryphal stamp of 何朝宗印 - He Chaozong Yin.

He Chaozong was a famous Chinese potter of the early 17th century who produced more primarily white porcelain Buddhist figures in the tradition of the Dehua kilns in Fujian province, better known in the west as White China.
