Etienne LIOTARD (Geneva 1702 - 1789) Portrait of George Keppel, 3rd earl Albemarle 1624 - 1772) Pastel on vellum 63 x 52,5 cm Accidents. There is another version of this pastel also on parchment, dated 1768, and sold in London at Sotheby's on December 9, 1992, n°77, reproduced. (see N. Jeffares, Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800, London, 2006, n° J.49.1053, reproduced, digital version). George Keppel was a military man and politician, born into a wealthy Flemish family that emigrated to England in the 17th century. Through his mother, he was a descendant of King Charles II of England. He began his military career in 1738. In 1745 he took part in the battle of Fontenoy and was appointed aide-de-camp to King George II and colonel in 1746. That same year, he was elected deputy of Chichester. He led the capture of Havana in 1762 as commander in chief. In 1765 he was knighted in the Order of the Garter. In 1772, he was appointed general. In 1768, the 3rd Earl Albemarle went to the south of France, to Nice, and then probably to Geneva, to consult the famous doctor Trochin. We thank Mr. Neil Jeffares for the attribution of this pastel and the elements contained in this note. RM
