Virgin and Child in carved ivory, central part of a triptych. Seated on a throne-bench, her head crowned and her bust slightly receding, Mary carries the Child standing on her left knee; she is dressed in a dress with a simple neckline and belted at the waist as well as a cloak with a flap coming back to the front of the knees; the Child, dressed in a long tunic, holds a sphere in his left hand and blesses with the other. Beautiful orange patina.
Germany, mid 14th century
Height : 11,3 cm - Width : 4,2 cm
Depth : 2.2 cm
Base (old missing parts, notably the head of the Child)
The angles of the base in the front, which have preserved the lower parts of the columns, as well as the fixing holes on the edges, on either side of the Virgin, indicate that this statuette was part of a canopy and constituted the central part of a triptych. It is likely that the flaps were to represent adoring angels, as can be seen on an ivory triptych in the Staatliche Museen in Berlin (inv. no. 628, fig.)
