Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Gewecke and Erna. 1913. Pencil drawing. Verso with the estate stamp (Lugt 1570 b) and the handwritten numbering "B Bc/Bh 20". On wove paper. 54.6 x 38.6 cm (21.4 x 15.1 in), sheet size. Verso with a small, fragmentary colored pencil sketch. [CH]. - Large-scale, dynamic drawing from the artist's Berlin studio and personal life. - Depicted is Hans Gewecke, immersed in conversation with Kirchner's companion Erna Schilling, one of the students at the drawing school "MUIM" (Modern Instruction in Painting)" founded by E. L. Kirchner and Max Pechstein in Berlin in 1911. - The decorative detail of a room decoration, which can be guessed behind Erna, can be clearly traced back to the artist's elaborately designed studio with the help of contemporary photographs. The present work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern. PROVENIENCE: Artist's estate (Davos 1938, Kunstmuseum Basel 1946).
