The catalog raisonné gives as information, page 408: "The artist realized, on his return from the Vosges front, a unique pictorial set in memory of the Great War. His friend Jacques Rouché, the owner of the property, convinced the painter, who at first did not want to externalize the ordeals he had gone through during his four years of war, and commissioned him: "Take the four walls! From 1919 to 1925, Desvallières devoted all his energy as a painter who had witnessed the conflict to the realization of this commission. In 1922, "The Sacrifice of War" intended for the right wall was completed.
