In 1879 the City of Paris organized a competition for the creation of an allegory of the Republic. Although still exiled in London, Dalou participated. His project, not selected for the Place de la République, was nevertheless commissioned for the Place de la Nation. The realization of this monument is for the artist the occasion of abundant reflections leading to numerous studies and sketches, including for the execution of the figure of the Republic. Among these, the model of the female torso inspired by the antique was a real success thanks to its bronze edition. Our copy is a print made by the Maison Susse with whom a contract was signed in 1902.
