Ottoman scribe's box Wood, tortoise shell, mother of pearl. Turkey, 18th century, Ottoman Empire Accidents, restorations and missing parts. H. 14 W. 33 D. 14,5 cm Mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell marquetry was very popular at the Ottoman court from the end of the 16th century. This decorative technique was also used to decorate the walls of the Baghdad Pavilion in Topkapi, initiated under Murad IV in 1639 and completed in 1640 during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim.
