ROUEN Albarello slightly curved earthenware with polychrome decoration of a man's head in profile in a frame of foliage, nets and scrolls on the edges. Workshop of Masséot Abaquesne. 16th century, circa 1545. H. 28 cm. Restored chips on the neck extended by a crack. Former collection of Dr. Chompret. Label Dr. Chompret on the reverse. Has appeared at the retrospective exhibition of French faience in 1932 at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, No. 129. Appeared in the exhibition Treasures of the earthenware of Rouen in Rouen in 1952, n° 15. Was shown in the exhibition Faïence française at the Grand Palais in 1980, n° 276, p. 199. This albarello and the following chevrette monogrammed MAB are most certainly part of the order placed with Masséot Abaquesne by the Rouen apothecary Pierre Dubosc in 1545 for 4152 pharmacy jars, that is 3720 albarelli designated "potz façon de bouettes" and 432 "potzs façon de chevrettes."
