DERUTA Ovoid peg on pedestal in majolica with polychrome decoration of the inscription A.Celidonia in a band surmounted by two birds in an entourage of foliage and crown. Beginning of the 16th century. H. 26,5 cm. Chips on the base. Former collection of Dr. Chompret. Reproduced by Dr. J. Chompret, Les faïences primitives françaises, 1946, fig. 55, pl. 19. The shape of this chevrette is similar to that of the chevrettes decorated with a Moor's head and dated 1501-1502. Several chevrettes of the same shape and with the same arrangement of the decoration have been recorded. Two are in the Gillet collection at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Lyon (Carola Fiocco and Gabriella Gherardhi¸ Majoliques italiennes du musées des Arts décoratifs de Lyon, 2001, n° 62 and 63, pp. 98-99). Another is in the Adrien-Dubouché museum in Limoges (Jeanne Giacomotti, Les majoliques des Musées nationaux, 1972, n° 471). See Dr. Chompret's personal handwritten record with his observations on page 47.
