This tile is part of a set of tiles made for the ceiling of the church of San Donato, near Castelli.
For a study of these tiles see the catalog of the exhibition Le Maioliche cinquecentesche di Castelli, Museum of Ceramics, Castelli, 1989. A tile decorated with a very similar portrait surmounted by the inscription Colas is kept in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin.
