DIDAY, FRANÇOIS (1802 Genève 1877)* : "Chênes au Kirchet (Meyringen)"; oil on paper, on hardboard; 40x54,5 cm; sig. u.l., verso titled on old label * The hammer price is also subject to VAT. - After his education at the École de dessin in Geneva, François Diday opened his own studio at the age of 22. Together with Wolfgang Adam Töpffer (1766-1847), he undertook hikes through Switzerland in 1825-1828, during which the two artists made numerous drawings and became familiar with the mountain world. In the following years, Diday established himself as one of the most sought-after Swiss painters of the Alps and a leading representative of the Geneva School. His studio attracted not only clients but also a notable number of students, including Alexandre Calame, with whom he was to share a lifelong friendship. Diday achieved fame with his romantic mountain landscapes, in which he knew how to harmoniously combine detail realism and decorative generosity of composition.
