HAUSWIRTH, JOHANN-JAKOB (Saanen 1809 - 1871 L'Etivaz) : Village life; silhouette; 23x38,5 cm (BM)
The motif of the garden fence with a little gate appears repeatedly in Hauswirth's work. The closed state gives rise to speculation about a sad fate that might have occurred in the associated cottage. In contrast to this is the open garden gate, under which a comparatively small figure stands in the present work. The depiction is complemented by other cheerful figures - a woman with a parasol and children on a "gigampfi" (see-saw), which contribute to the idyllic overall effect of the composition.
