Jacques Callot (1592-1635
) Combat of Avigliano, or Combat of Veillane. (Pl. still called The Marshal of Effiat). 1630. etching. 528 x 350. Lieure 663. Very nice proof on thin laid paper, probably from the 1st state (of 2), before reinforcement of the square line, trimmed on this one but well complete of the tablet (the fact that the proof is trimmed on this square line does not allow to determine the state with certainty). Fine vertical print crease at lower left of subject. Slight gray ink haze in the backgrounds and in the shelf (evidence of a trial print?).
This plate, left unfinished by Callot (without dedication), celebrates the victory of French troops over those of the Duke of Savoy in a battle that took place on July 10, 1630 near Turin.
