History:
In France, in the early days of cinema, the real celebrities were comedians like Max Linder and Charlie Chaplin. The production and distribution companies chose to promote these actors rather than the films themselves. This is how advertising posters were developed. They are called "posters passes everywhere" whose tradition continued until the 40s.
