Biography :
Louis Antoine Henri de Bourbon, Duke of Enghien (1772-1804)
Son of Louis Henri Joseph de Bourbon, 9th prince of Condé, he fought in his father's armies until 1801 before settling, after the signing of the treaty of Lunéville, in Ettenheim, in Baden, opposite Strasbourg. It was there, in neutral territory and therefore in violation of international law, that he was kidnapped during the night of March 15 to 16, 1804. Transferred to Vincennes, he was summarily judged by a war council, which unanimously declared him guilty of conspiracy and sentenced him to death. The duke of Savary ordered the execution of the duke, who was shot by lantern light during the night of March 20-21 and buried in the moat of the castle.
History:
A pastel depicting the Prince as a child, cutting up soldiers similar to our own, can be found in the collections of the Château de Chantilly. (Inv. PD 553).
