Writing table in marquetry with musical instruments, the top resting on a belt decorated with utensils opening to a drawer containing three compartments with buckets, resting on arched legs; the reverse side with a handwritten inscription in ink: "3 pièces argenté Poirier"; (accidents and restorations; the bronze falls probably brought back at a later date).
Made under the direction of Simon-Philippe Poirier.
Louis XVI period.
H: 69.5 cm, W: 50.5 cm, D: 35.5 cm
A table stamped BVRB, from the collection of Baron de Rédé at the Hôtel Lambert in Paris, also had an inscription in ink: "3 pièces argenté" (Paris, Sotheby's sale on 16 March 2005, lot 124)
.
This was a habit of the merchant Simon-Philippe Poirier to communicate his instructions to the manufacturer of the silver-plated cups lining the drawer compartments. An identical inscription is also found on the Earl of Coventry's famous BVRB flap desk. This inscription tells us that this table was sold through Poirier.
