Ndimu belly mask, Makonde, Mozambique

Called Ndimu, this type of mask represents the belly of a young pregnant woman. It is used by the Makonde during their initiation rites. Worn by a man and doubled with a human face mask, it appeared in performances linked to community life where the dancer simulated the pains of childbirth. Covered with a beautiful dark patina, this mask is distinguished by its relatively rough appearance, which contrasts with the fullness and softness of the forms. The generously rounded belly is marked by the traces of modelling.
