H. 3 9/16 in
Provenance :
- Former collection Bertrand Goy
This rare small figurine, placed at the end of an antelope horn, was used to decorate a whistle linked to the Nkisi cult. This feminine representation in a kneeling position, hands joined, reproduces all the features of the great sculpture produced by the Phemba society of Mayombe, in particular the serene appearance, the beautiful mouth with hemmed lips, and the traditional raffia headdress.
For an example of the same type formerly in the M. Pinto collection, see : Raoul Lehuard, Art bakongo- Les centres de style, vol 1, Arnouville, Arts d'Afrique noire, 1989. 53
