Female statue
Baule people
Ivory Coast
Wood with light brown patina
H. 44 cm
Provenance :
Collected in situ by Mr. Begué between 1931 and 1935
Classically made statue in a standing position with slightly bent legs, hands placed on the belly around a prominent navel which attest to the status of mother - past or future - of this Baule woman. The ringed neck surmounted by a face with soft, fine features and the sophisticated headdress with four plaits are also characteristic of this statuary.
Beautiful light brown patina. Some cracks and a missing left ear.
