Christ with a Reed
Parquet panel.
Restorations.
52.5 x 36 cm
Luis de Morales, a great religious painter, painted this Ecce Homo with great realism in the rendering of flesh and expression. The painting depicts Christ in a three-quarter view, in a mannerist muscular tension; he is dressed in a simple tunic and carrying a reed that served as an instrument for his outrages. The theme is one of the artist's favourite subjects (see I. Backsbacka, Luis De Morales, Helsinki, 1962, p. 361). A version very close to our painting was presented at Agnews in 2019.
