Large rectangular miniature painted on ivory, signed lower right S.
Duprat, after the painting by Schnetz presented at the Salon of 1824 and purchased by King Charles X, now kept in deposit at the Museum of Arras (inv. 7889).
In its rectangular stained wood frame with gilt bronze surround.
On the back a handwritten label: Purchased at the sale of the Gallery of S.
A. R. Madame (the Duchess of Berry) in Rosny, Paris, February 1836. An old woman predicted to the young shepherd Montalte that he would be pope, and indeed he became pope under the name of Sixtus V. Good condition, slight wear.
