Publishing contract for Armance.
Paris, June 11, 1827.
Signed manuscript, 2 pages in-4.
Precious original handwritten contract, in the hand of Urbain
Canel, for the original edition of Armance: it is signed
H. Beyle and bears some additions in the novelist's hand.
Dated June 11, 1827, it binds Stendhal to the associated publishers Joseph
Buros and Urbain Canel: the novel appeared at the address of the latter, in three small volumes, in 1827. Of the first, Joseph Buros, almost nothing is known.
In the left margin of the first page of the contract, Stendhal noted, "Original of the agreement relating to the first edition."
And on page two, he ended the sentence "It is further agreed that it will be given to M. Beyle" with this clarification: "thirty six copies." He then signed at the bottom with the publishers: "Approved the writing, H. Beyle"
The contract for a period of one year from the day the work went on sale provides for a print run of one thousand copies "and double hand pass". "If M. Beyle made any corrections in returning the proofs that would require extraordinary printing costs, they would be at his expense." Stendhal received 1000 francs from the publishers.
