Note:
Son of the painter Nicolas Moillon and brother of Louise Moillon, Isaac Moillon frequented Parisian artistic circles very early on. This work, located by Sylvain Laveissière in the 1640s, corresponds to the time when the artist was immersed in the painting of Simon Vouet, whose pupils he frequented, such as Le Sueur and Poerson. In this large canvas, Isaac Moillon proposes an ingenious allegorical composition in which the draperies quote Vouet's painting. In the centre, a female figure crowned with laurel branches holds in her hand a piece of paper NON SIT / MORTALE / QUOD OPTAS (may what you choose not be mortal); she is surrounded by Time and a female figure.
The references to Vouet through the beauty of the colour and to Gentileschi for the balance of the composition place this painting in the great Parisian painting of the 1640s - 1650s.
