Note:
Joos Daneels was born in Antwerp around 1605 and was apprenticed to the Antwerp Guild of Painters between September 1618 and September of the following year. He became a master at the guild between September 1627 and September 1628. In 1628 he married Suzanna Willenhout (1605-1664). Rombouts lists a number of pupils of the Daneels in the 1640s until his death (P. Rombouts and T. van Lerius, De Liggeren en andere historische archieven der Antwerpsche Sint
Lucasgilde onder de zinspreuk: Wt ionsten versaemt (2 Antwerpen, 1864-1876, I, pp. 551, 650, 658, II, 124, 297, 351, 352, 366). He worked with, among others,
Martin Ryckaert. He also drew a lot for tapestry.
A drawing signed by him was in the hands of the dealer Crispian Riley-Smith in England and two others in two private collections in Paris (one sold at
Christie's, Paris, 21 March 2002, n° 194). All these drawings are identical in technique to our sheet, treated in red cameos on red prepared paper.
