Note :
Genoese painter, Giovanni Andrea Ferrari uses the chiaroscuro technique in part of his work, which thus bears witness to the influence of Caravaggio. In our painting, the faces of the shepherds and the Virgin are struck by the divine light that seems to emanate from the Child, creating a play of light and shadow. The same supernatural light strikes the body of Christ carried by two angels in the painting sold anonymously, Amsterdam (Christie's), November 9, 1998, reproduced, n°69.
