Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750). Studio o sia Tre Sonate per il Violino solo senza Basso Del Sigre Seb: Bach (Bonn, N. Simrock, [1802 ?]); folio of 43 p., bound in purple half-basin, title-piece on the upper board.
Rare first complete edition of the six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin (BWV 1001-1006). Engraved music; page number 169; price 6 francs. (RISM A/I B 458).
Despite the title Tre Sonate, the edition is indeed complete with the six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, each Partita (not designated under this title) being published following a Sonata and without separation: Sonata I (Sonata No. 1 and Partita No. 1, BWV 1001-1002), Sonata II ((Sonata No. 2 and Partita No. 2, with the famous Ciaccona, BWV 1003-1004), Sonata III (Sonata No. 3 and Partita No. 3, BWV 1005-1006). There is a variant of the title without the mention "Studio o sia".
Composed by Bach in 1720, the Sonatas and Partitas had circulated until then only in manuscript copies, with the exception of the Fugue of the Sonata in C (BWV 1005) published by Jean-Baptiste Cartier in L'Art du violon (1798)
Some light foxing.
Provenance: collection of the violinist Henri Vieuxtemps.
