[The Green Ray by Jules Verne. Illustrations by Benett. Paris, Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation, J. Hetzel et Cie, sd (1882).
Large single in-8°. Publisher's full red percaline boards (only colour) called "oriental". Spine with six caissons. Gilt edges. Blue endpapers. No mention of the binder (Jauzac attributes it to Magnier, which suggests that one of the other known paperbacks is signed). Printed by Gauthier-Villars.
Spine slightly faded. Covers restored. Otherwise, a very nice copy of this very rare hardback. Title unknown to Jauzac.
On the second plate, rose window and frames of the cartonnage "with the initials JV-JH", different, therefore, from the copy presented by Jauzac in his bibliography p. 329 and from the one offered in the Jacob 1 Sale (lot n°65). We can therefore assume that the bookbinder had made several proposals for the second plate to Hetzel...
Jauzac knew of only three single volumes and one triple volume, covered with this "oriental" binding: Un billet de loterie, L'École des Robinsons, Les Cinq cents millions de la Begum and L'Île mystérieuse. We offered a fifth title in the previous sale (Le Tour du monde en 80 jours), so here is the sixth, known, like the others, as a single copy!
