[Celestial spaces] From the Earth to the Moon/Around the Moon by Jules Verne. Illustrations by de Montaut (From the Earth to the Moon) and Émile Bayard and A. de Neuville (Around the Moon). Paris, Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation, J. Hetzel et Cie, sd (ca 1880). Large double in-8°. Publisher's full red percaline boards "with the solar world and the gendarme hat". Second plate of Lenègre type "b". Lenègre Binder. Gilt edges. Blue endpapers. Printed by Gauthier-Villars. Catalogue "AI" for 1880-1881. Spine golds a little faded but well present. Some foxing. Otherwise, a very nice copy of this very rare binding. This first and only version, issued in 1880, whose title composition appearing in the cartouche on the first board was qualified by us as "au chapeau de gendarme", was made by the bookbinder Magnier. Responsible for the binding of Hector Servadac's "solar world" since 1877, Engel was finally assigned the binding of De la Terre à la Lune and Autour de la Lune from 1883.
