Autograph poem signed in ink, n.d.; 1 page in-4 oblong.
On a scrapbook page, Hugo transcribed the penultimate poem from Les Voix intérieures (1837): "The grave says to the rose:
- Of the tears with which the dawn sprinkles you
What do you do, fl eur of loves?
The rose says to the grave:
- What do you do with that which falls
Into your ever-open abyss? ..."
This melancholic poem was set to music by Liszt, Wagner and
César Cui.
