On June 12, 1956, Jean Cocteau was promoted to the grade of Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University of Oxford; on June 14, he received his diploma and gave his "Oxford speech" on poetry.
He is represented here in a toga, wearing a square or mortarboard hat, on his way to the ceremony, accompanied by Professor Jean Seznec, who is going to receive him.
