The bookbinder at the kitabkhaneh, North India, Punjab, ca. 1860-80
Gouache and gold on heavy paper, blue framed and pasted on white sheet.
A craftsman, seated on the floor of his workshop, is trimming the leaves of a book being made and held by a press. Around him, various tools are strewn on the floor while the fruit of his work is presented in a pile on the piece of furniture facing him.
