Les amours de Paris et Hélène
Canvas
Bears a signature and date lower left L. David f / XDCCLXXXVIII
54 x 99 cm

Our painting is a partial reworking of Louis David's painting (Canvas, 146 x 181 cm, signed and dated in Roman numerals 1788) commissioned by the Count of Artois for his bedroom at the Château de Bagatelle.
He commissioned David to paint two other works of similar size, one by François André Vincent depicting Renaud and Armide and another by Ménageot depicting Mars and Venus.
David's preparatory drawing (Getty Museum) is signed and dated 1786. The work itself was completed in early 1788. It appeared at the Salon in 1789.
