The Adoration of the Magi
Panel, a triptych
Overall dimensions : 101 x 138 cm
Restorations
We can compare our triptych with the Adoration of the Magi Triptych by the Master of 1518 kept in the Lille Museum of Fine Arts. This theme was often treated by Antwerp artists in the 16th century. It was probably a favourite subject for them to represent the exuberance of the costumes. Artists did not hesitate to depict characters in a complex setting and to dress them in shimmering colours.
Many painting workshops produced works in series and in small format, in order to better export them.
In the 16th century, Antwerp was the leading port in Flanders. The city was home to the very first trade exchange and welcomed merchants from America and India. Its wealth, as well as the mixture of foreign influences, saw the emergence of a new style: Antwerp Mannerism.
