Punu/Lumbo mask (Gabon)
Classic okuyi/mukuyi mask with a central shell headdress bordered by two large lateral braids surmounting a face with regular features enhanced with kaolin and red pigments on the mouth. A small handle under the chin would have been used to hold the mask, to attach an ornament, or to attach it to a rod to wear it higher or to display it like a puppet. This type of mask would be an idealized feminine representation celebrating the beauty and above all the importance of women, both in society and in the spirit world.
