Artus Claessens was an Antwerp painter registered as a master in the registers of the Corporation of Painters in 1625. His style is close to that of Frans Snyders and Clara Peeters. His still lifes are rich in various objects and animals. We can relate this painting to those sold on 21 September 2012 at Koller in Zurich, no. 3045, and on 21 April 1993 at Sotheby's in London, no. 300. The attribution has been confirmed on photograph by Fred Meijer.
