Moïse Kisling will evoke the first moments of his meeting with Renée:
"It was there (in my studio) that one evening, which was like any other evening, a young girl entered. Her name was Miss Gros, she painted and was curious to visit my studio. I liked her at once strangely, with her hair of a violent blond, coiffed like a dog, her face with a pointed chin, a large nose, an irregular face, but animated by a questing look. »
Moïse Kisling painted this portrait of Renée in 1915, the year they met. The brushstroke is spontaneous; the palette of colours, both dark and vivid, mixing blue, green and bright red, gives an intensity, a particular strength to the portrait. The angular lines of Renée's face are a gift that Kisling chooses to highlight, revealing an expressive and resolutely modern portrait in a three-quarter stance. Renée, a charismatic personality and true muse, never ceased to fascinate the artist.
