From the Exodus (II. 15-21), the veteran episode that Vincenzo Dandini chose to represent thus depicts Moses in the land of Mandian and the daughters of the priest Jethro. "Now a priest had seven daughters. They came to draw and fill the troughs to water their father's small livestock. "And shepherds came and drove them out. Moses arose and came to their aid and watered the flocks." In thanksgiving for this, Jethro offered hospitality to the son of Abraham and gave him his daughter Sephora in marriage. The frowned features of Moses standing in front of the two richly dressed shepherds leave little doubt as to the exact moment.
Vincenzo Dandini, listed as early as the 17th century by his biographer Filippo Baldinucci (1625 -1697), was born in Florence where he spent most of his career. Although he was initially a pupil of his brother Cesare (1596 -1657), he then entered the studio of Passignano, Rosselli and Commodi before leaving for Rome where he entered the studio of Peter of Cortona (1596 -1669).
He returns to Florence in the 1637s and we know that from those years there is a painting by his brother for Michel Agnolo Venturi on the same theme, which Baldinucci reports in his biography of our painter. It is now kept at the National Gallery of Ireland and is dated around 1635 (fig. 1). The work that we present for sale today is similar in composition, although Vincenzo and Cesare stand out in particular in the form of the faces, the more exacerbated expressions of our version, the more authoritative presence of
