The inscription at the bottom of the painting tells us that the young nun depicted, formerly Juana Valdes Tellez Caron, entered the convent Regina Celi where she became Sister Juana de Nura. Probably done before she left her lay life, the painting was intended to remain in the girl's family, as the last memory of her image.
