Pretty suite engraved on copper by Villerey after paintings by Eustache Le Sueur, first edition, consisting of a portrait of Le Sueur and 25 plates. It is preceded by an Abrégé de la vie de Le Sueur by Dezallier d'Argenville and an Abrégé de la vie de saint Bruno by Abbé Godescard, and is accompanied by an explanatory text of the engravings. The Life of Saint Bruno is the most famous work by Eustache Le Sueur (1617-1655). In 1645, the artist received this commission for 22 paintings retracing the life of the saint to decorate the cloister of the Carthusian monastery in Paris. These paintings, originally executed on wood and then transposed to canvas, are now kept in the Louvre Museum.
A large paper copy in morocco with the arms of Marie-Louise, Empress of the French. Coat of arms slightly tarnished and almost erased on the second plate.
Provenance: ex-armorial libris of the Russian Polovstov family (perhaps that of Alexander Alexandrovich Polovstov).
