Philosophical works. New edition, revised by M. Thurot. Paris, Bossange, De l'Imprimerie de Firmin-Didot, 1821-1825. 7 volumes in-8, red morocco, border decorated with a roulette wheel, crowned figure in the center, smooth spine decorated with a floral composition, inner ringed roulette wheel, blue moire lining and endpapers, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Partly original edition of the works of John Locke (1632-1704), a philosopher generally considered to be one of the precursors of the spirit of the Enlightenment. He is readily credited with the authorship of several major philosophical concepts such as empiricism, and liberalism in its political and economic meanings. Locke's major work, On Human Understanding, occupies five of the seven volumes of this edition. An out-of-text table leaflet in volume III. Superb copy in morocco with the figure of Marie-Louise, Duchess of Parma, former Empress of the French. A few freckles. Some skillful restorations to the binding, hanging on the upper cover of volume V. Provenance: Calvin Bullock (ex-libris).
