LA BRUYÈRE Jean de. Les Caractères de Théophraste et de La Bruyère with notes by M. Coste. Paris, Hochereau and
Panckoucke, 1765; large in-4, contemporary binding of porphyry calf, gilt fillets on the boards, spine ribbed with gilt designs, red and green parts, interior lace and gilt edges.
Beautiful edition published after Pierre Coste's 1739 edition of a more modest format. It contains the key, numerous and more developed notes, unpublished material and various pieces that complete the last original edition of 1696. Portrait of La Bruyère engraved by Charles-Nicolas Cochin after Cathelin, title vignette, 3 headpieces and a cul-de-lampe by Gravelot engraved by Duclos and Lebas. These beautiful quarto volumes found their place on the shelves of bibliophiles who loved books of their time in large format. Beautiful copy apparently in large paper and well bound. Ex-libris of M. de Vassal.
