SAINT ANDRÉ in carved, polychrome and gilded limestone, sketched back. The apostle is standing with his head slightly tilted on his right shoulder, carrying a closed book in his right hand and holding the X-shaped cross of his torment against him with his other hand hidden under a section of his cloak; his face is almond-shaped with almond-shaped eyes, prominent cheekbones, a bifid beard with symmetrical locks; he is dressed in a long tunic leaving the tip of his right bare foot uncovered and a broad cloak falling sideways in wavy folds.
Burgundy or Franche-Comté, first quarter of the 15th century
Height: 39.5 cm
(slight accidents and lacks in particular at the ends of the cross, small restoration to one of its branches)
This beautiful statuette must have belonged to an apostolic college in an altarpiece. Its style links it to Burgundian statuary with its broad face with slit eyes and pronounced cheekbones, the place given to the draped, wide and undulating, up to this hand holding the X-shaped cross, not visible under the mantle, one of the characteristics of the Sutherian school as shown by several weeping tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy.
